LHS Band Boosters

Blood drives
United Blood Services, this area's nonprofit community blood provider, will have a few blood drives in the coming days. Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from parents or guardian. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Ole Miss Spirit Squad will host a blood drive in the Circle at the University of Mississippi. And finally, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, the UBS Blood Mobile will be part at the Ole Miss Law School for another blood drive.
Free flu shots
The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is sponsoring free flu shots for low-income families without insurance at Interfaith Compassion Ministry from 9:30 to noon Tuesday. ICM is located at 904 N. Lamar Blvd. No appointments will be taken. The School of Pharmacy will also offer free flu shots at Tuesday night’s More than a Meal free dinner for the needy at the Stone Center from 5 to 7 p.m. No appointments will be taken. Flu shots will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis at both places until supplies last.
More Than a Meal
The More Than a Meal program is offered from 5 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Stone Center on Washington Avenue. A free meal will be provided, tutoring will be available for students and more. For more information, call 801-4712.

LAMAR HOUSE EXHIBITS
New exhibits in the L.Q.C. Lamar House tell the story of the Mississippi statesman’s life against the events and politics of the Civil War era. They can be viewed Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. Group tours may be scheduled for most days. Malone Design & Fabrication of Atlanta designed the exhibit to enhance the recently restored house. Each room reflects a different period of Lamar’s life and times. Audio excerpts of his speeches are included. The L.Q.C. Lamar House Museum is at 616 North 14th, with the main parking lot on North 16th. Square Toast for Scholarships
The Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management will host the fourth annual Square Toast for Scholarships event from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday on the Square. Square Toast for Scholarships is a food and wine tasting event, with a silent auction, creating scholarships for students in the Ole Miss Hospitality Management Program. Marriage Seminar
Oxford Church of Christ, 409 N. Lamar Blvd., will host a marriage seminar, “Marriage ... Who has the time?,” this weekend. The non-threatening small group, interactive DVD-based event will be facilitated by John Kennedy, a Christian counselor from Memphis. Suicide Prevention Walk
The University of Mississippi will aid in suicide awareness and prevention by hosting the second annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk. Together with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, local hosts include the University of Mississippi Clinical Disaster Research Collaborative, Psychological Services Center, Department of Psychology and Psychology Honors Society. The walk will take place Nov. 5 in the Lyceum Circle on the UM campus. Registration starts and 8 a.m., opening ceremonies begin at 9, and the 1.5-mile walk through campus starts at 9:30. Following the walk, participants are welcome to enjoy food, live music, and discussion with each other as well as mental health experts from the University and community. Oxford Civic Chorus
The Oxford Civic Chorus invites you to travel with them to France on wings of song. The chorus’s fall concert, “Chantez! A Celebration of French Choral Music,” will be presented at 3 p.m. Nov. 6 at North Oxford Baptist Church on Old Highway 7 north of Oxford. The program, sung in several languages, will showcase an array of choral pieces by French composers from many different eras. Stroke, Osteoporosis Screenings

Holiday House
The annual Holiday House, sponsored by the Mississippi Homemaker Volunteers, returns this weekend. The event has been held for more than 30 years in Oxford. The Holiday House will be held until 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Arts and crafts booths will be set up and entertainment and demonstrations will be features, along with a silent auction to benefit the National Guard Family Support Group. Toys will also be collected for Santa’s Toy Box. About 20 vendors have already signed up to sell a range of items from jewelry and quilts to woodworks and home canned goods. Double Decker Bus Tour
A Double Decker Bus Tour will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. Guide and historian Jack Mayfield will give visitors and residents an up close look at historic points of interest, including North and South Lamar, St. Peter's Cemetery and Rowan Oak, and the University of Mississippi campus, while riding on the Double Decker bus. In addition to the driving tour, the bus will stop to tour two historic homes: the L.Q.C. Lamar House and Cedar Oaks Mansion. The tour departs from Skipwith Cottage, on the Square next door to Oxford City Hall. Space is limited. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children and includes admission into both homes. Strut Your Mutt
The annual Strut Your Mutt dog walk to benefit the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society will be held Sunday in Oxford and on the Ole Miss campus. The fee to “strut your mutt” is $25, which includes refreshments (for the four-legged walkers, too) and official T-shirts for the fundraiser. Registration will be held on the Oxford Square from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Sunday with the walk between 2 and 4 p.m. The walk from the Lafayette County Courthouse lawn will include a stroll through the Grove and other parts of the Ole Miss campus. YAC WINE TASTING
The Oxford Tasting Society and Yoknapatawpha Arts Council will host their second annual wine tasting event, Three Blind Wines, at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Three Blind Wines is a blind wine tasting where you and a teammate select three bottles of wine. Two of the three bottles of wine are set out for the tasting with the labels covered up, while the third bottle is held as part of the wine auction prize. Everyone then samples the other team’s wines and votes for their favorite wine of the night. Whoever has the wine selected as the most popular of the night wins the auction, which includes all the other team’s third bottle of wine. Tickets are $25 per team ($20 for members of the Arts Council and Oxford Tasting Society), plus the cost of three bottles of red wine. Pie sale Fundraiser
The Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at the University of Mississippi is selling pies Tuesday to raise funds for the Arthritis Foundation, the sorority’s national philanthropy. Pies available include cherry, apple, pecan, key lime, chocolate and pumpkin. Pies can be bought by the slice for $3 or the whole pie for $15. Free on-campus delivery is available for pre-ordered whole pies. Pick-up orders will be available at the AOII house from 5 to 6 p.m. The AOII house will be open from 7 -9 p.m. for those who want to eat in the house. A pie-eating contest will be held at the sorority house at 7:30. The contest is open to everyone and first-place prize includes a free pie and a trophy. GUIDED DEER, TURKEY HUNT
The Oxford Exchange Club is sponsoring a raffle for a guided deer and turkey hunt on a 900-acre Lafayette County farm. The deer hunt is schedule for Dec. 1 to Jan. 15 (one buck and one doe). The turkey hunt is scheduled for March 1 to April 15, 2012, (one turkey). Both hunts are two days and one night. Only 500 tickets will be sold at $10 each or three for $20 and the drawing will be held at noon Nov. 17. Plates to End Poverty
The UM Homeless Outreach will host The Plates to End Poverty, a silent auction to benefit ICM and More Than a Meal, from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 17 at Emileigh's Kitchen on the Square. The auction will feature ceramic plates painted by notable individuals from the community. In addition to these plates, the auction will include additional pieces of art and items donated by students, community members, and local businesses. Homeless Outreach hopes that through this auction, it will help to raise awareness about homelessness in Oxford, as well as provide financial support for ICM and More Than a Meal.

Holiday Open House
The Oxford Downtown Council will have its 2011 Holiday Open House on Nov. 25 around the Square. This year’s Open House will feature a host of family-friendly activities and events to usher in the holiday season. The city has agreed to allow the Downtown Council to provide a Christmas tree on the Square — a first for Oxford. The open house event will be capped off with a lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. when Mayor Pat Patterson will “throw the switch” to light the tree and the Square. Santa will then officiate the Raffle for Downtown Dollars, available at participating Council shops. The Oxford Convention and Visitor's Bureau will provide coffee and hot chocolate in front of Skipwith Cottage. ‘CHRISTMAS AT LUCILLE’S’
Leisure Lifestyles, established through the cooperative efforts of the Oxford Park Commission and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, will host “Christmas at Lucille’s Place,” from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at 419 Van Buren Avenue. The program will feature Christmas decorations and holiday ideas with a Southern flair by University Florist.
